Letter From the Artist | The Creative Process
As a film director, I rarely begin with a plot. I begin with a feeling.
Sometimes it is an emotion I cannot name. Sometimes it is a statement, a question, or something about the world that refuses to leave me alone. I sit with it until it begins to reveal a person, a moment, and eventually, a story.
From there, I look for the human experience inside a larger political or social reality.
I don't want to tell an audience what to think. I want them to feel something first.
For me, emotion is an entry point. If I can make someone care about one person, one relationship, or one loss, perhaps the political question surrounding them stops being abstract. It becomes human.
That is how I approach filmmaking. I begin with a feeling, build a story around it, and allow that story to open a door into something larger.
Because sometimes the most powerful way to talk about the world is to begin with something as small and complicated as a human heart.
